Starting in May and ending in August, the intern will gain plenty of writing experience.

The intern will cover stories on municipal meetings, school board meetings, community events and features, average three to six stories a week.

In addition to covering stories, the intern will type police reports, community news, take pictures, edit and possibly help with some layout.

The person should be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment and have flexible hours.

This internship is a great portfolio builder and can be used to gain class credit.

Harrisburg Internship Semester

Applications for the Harrisburg Internship Semester are now being accepted.

This is a PASSHE sponsored program open to outstanding undergraduate students from the 14 PASSHE universities.

Students receive 15 credits for working in various state agencies, attending seminars and completing a major research project.

The program is open to all majors but to qualify, students must have a 3.0 GPA and 45 credits completed.

The internship currently pays a stipend of $6500 for the semester. Additional program details can be found at www.passhe.edu/this.

Dr. Reed recommended that I forward this information to you for the PW blog/website.

I was doing some research for my class and I came across this:

It's a blog article about proofreading/editing scams.

Prospective employers want their applicants to take a "test," which usually involves editing a full article or book chapter.

Then they'll dump the applicant, saying his/her skills are not up to snuff. But they still retain the product of the writer's labors.

According to the author of the blog, the scammers will send out different chapters to different applicants, and they can get entire books edited for free like this.

If I can find company names for the scammers, I'll send those along as well. Thanks for your time.

Internship: Planned Parenthood of PA

This summer, Planned Parenthood Association of Pennsylvania is launching a Grassroots Organizing Internship (just like the one that ultimately got me my job!).

It will be a ten-week program. The interns will help build support in their targeted area around comprehensive, medically accurate sex education.

Internship: The Margaret Sanger Papers Project

The Margaret Sanger Papers Project is pleased to announce its summer internship program for 2009.

We seek applications from graduate or advanced undergraduate students to work with the editorial staff at the Project's offices in New York City. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to become proficient in primary and secondary research, and the process of editing historical documents for publication. Interns can apply for internships working with the book or digital edition.

BOOK INTERNSHIP: Interns will be working on Volume IV of the Selected Papers of Margaret Sanger, covering the years 1920-1966 and focusing on her efforts to create a global birth control movement. Interns will work under the supervision of editors on specific topics, tracing people, places, events and issues covered in the documents. The research will be used to produce annotation and introductory material for the volume. Research will be conducted in the Project's offices, using the comprehensive microfilm edition and other primary sources, as well as at local libraries and with resources available on the Internet.

DIGITAL INTERNSHIP: We have two digital projects available for interns this summer.
1) We are preparing a digital edition on Margaret Sanger's 1922 trip to Japan for the Women and Social Movements web collection. Interns will transcribe, encode, and conduct research for essays and interpretation on the documents for this small collection.

2) We are also continuing work on our digital edition of Sanger's speeches and articles, focusing on texts written by Margaret Sanger in the 1930s. Interns will be proofread the texts, add XML encoding, and draft subject index entries for the documents. Interns will conduct research as needed to verify dates, titles, and publication information, or to identify the names of people, organizations and books mentioned in the documents.

Placements with a wide variety of agency programs, both in Harrisburg and around the state, are available; placement will depend on both student interest and programmatic needs. Internship: 2009 PSNE ONLINE REPORTER

The Pennsylvania Society of Newspapers Editors (PSNE) will for the first time offer an internship for college juniors and seniors enrolled in journalism or communications programs in Pennsylvania.

For five days (May 27, 2009 through May 31, 2009), student interns will cover the annual Pennsylvania Press Conference and Keystone Press Awards for a comprehensive online operation entitled The PSNE Online Reporter. Throughout the weekend conference in May 2009, students will have a chance to work one on one with industry professionals to produce the live Web site, conduct interviews, report on industry issues, cover convention speeches and the awards programs, and have a chance to network with editors from all over the state.

This is a chance to build your resume and make contacts for that first job.

Students who are interested in reporting, shooting video, taking photographs, designing a Web site and copy editing should apply. Applications are due by Friday, December 19, 2008. Notification of acceptance will be sent to students by Friday, January 23, 2009.

The internship will pay a stipend of $150 to each student and will cover accommodations with most meals being provided. Some students may also make arrangements for academic credit for the internship.

Hidden River Internships

Hidden River needs readers -- students who are good at reading and evaluating a manuscript -- and there are guidelines we use which I always give the students guidance about. Some of my students read both fiction and drama; others find themselves more comfortable with one and not the other.

In addition to readers, we could use people who might help out with
the publication process -- preparing the manuscripts for publishing in
hard copy, eBook and online versions.

Also -- the anthology launch party and the scripted readings we'll be
doing this year could use some hands -- we're partnering with
Philadelphia Theatre Workshop to
do the readings.

We also have several websites, and have launched a creative writing
school. I'm working this summer to update the delivery model -- I'm
recording podcasts of lectures, uploading them to iTunes, then linking
that to the website, where there will be a forum, a Q&A, and a
newsletter as well as the site as it is. It's going to be much more
interactive, and will require some extra hands, just to keep things
current. It's also my hope that, as part of the creative writing
school, there will be online classes, online tutoring, and some in-
school residencies.

Students might be able to help with those as well.

As you can see, there is a lot happening here at Hidden River. I've still got my own novel to revise, a collection of my own short stories to finish, and a play to finish in rough draft. I keep waiting for Apple to come out with its next big product -- the iClone. I'll be first in line to buy one!

Internship I Meeting was held on Thursday, February 14, from 11-11:50 a.m. in room 228of Lytle Hall.

PW Block Advisement will be Thursday, March 20, from 11-11:50 a.m. in room 102 of the Academic Forum. This meeting is mandatory for all Professional Writing students who will not graduate in Spring 2008. If you are taking Professional Seminar and an internship during the Summer of 2008, you need not attend this meeting.

Internship II Meeting will be Thursday, April 3, from 11-11:50 a.m. in room 228 of Lytle Hall. The meeting is mandatory for all PW students planning to complete the internship during the summer or fall of 2008 and is open to all Professional Writing students.

An information session regarding the Senior Comprehensive Examination in Professional Writing will be held Friday, February 29, at 3 p.m. in Lytle 206. All students planning to take the exam during the Spring 2008 semester should attend; sample and actual questions will be distributed.

Senior Comprehensives will be Friday, March 28, from 3-7 p.m. in rooms 27 and 28 of DeFrancesco. Students who intend to complete the Professional Writing Program in spring or summer 2008 must pass the comprehensive examination in order to graduate.

Professional Writing Seniors will give presentations regarding their internships on Friday, April 11, and Friday, May 2, from 3-6 p.m. in Alumni Auditorium of the McFarland Student Union. Students currently enrolled in WRI 100 must attend, but all Professional Writing students are invited to attend and learn more about the internship experience.

General Information

The summer 2008 Communication Internship will be a full-time position beginning after classes end in May and running through mid-August. General office hours are 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with one unpaid hour for lunch. The intern will be expected to work up to 37.5 hours per week, and (unpaid) vacation time may be scheduled as needed.

The intern will be required to keep an hour sheet and will be paid $8.00 per hour. Paychecks are distributed once per month on the 15th. This position is not eligible for health or other benefits.

Internship Duties

The communication internship will provide a mix of writing and public relations experience. The intern will help with the following tasks:

Assisting with the scholarship luncheon in late May (working with foundation staff to greet guests, set up the room, and coordinate photography of all recipients and their families), and other events as scheduled

Drafting and issuing press releases about grants and charitable funds as needed

Interviewing endowment donors and drafting a biographical sketch from each interview

Drafting and designing a Board of Directors Handbook from existing materials

Drafting impact reports on key grant-making areas (such as Scholarships, Bridge Fund, AEDs, etc.)

Working with the foundation’s architectural team to find and create visuals for a monthly BCTV program on Green Building

Other fun duties as assigned, including the possibility of de-duping mailing lists, scanning photos, running errands and even working the copier every so often.

Location and parking

The intern will primarily work at the Community Foundation’s office located at 501 Washington Street, 8th floor, in the City of Reading. The intern will park, free of charge, on the surface parking lot located at the corner of Third and Court streets until construction begins. This lot is approximately three blocks from the office, with a lovely view of the bus terminal and the fire house.

Qualifications

The Communications Intern must have the following attributes and skills:

Excellent writing skills, including spotless grammar and strong editing skills
Ability to work on multiple assignments over the course of a day or week, and shift gears as needed

Desire to meet new people and interview them about their lives

Ability to work with minimal supervision – many assignments in this position require the intern to work independently (i.e. scheduling interviews, writing, research) and to take ownership of his or her role in a project.

Competency in Microsoft Word (working knowledge of other programs such as Excel, PowerPoint, InDesign and Photoshop is helpful but not required).

Work Environment

The mission of Berks County Community Foundation is to promote philanthropy and improve the quality of life for the residents of Berks County. The non-profit foundation manages more than 300 charitable funds, each supporting its own cause. There are six full-time staff members, four part-time staff members and one special event consultant. Interns become part of the foundation team during their time here. They attend staff meetings, and are often included in project discussions. While the internship is primarily a learning experience for the student, the foundation also benefits from the real work the intern accomplishes during his or her time here. 2008 Summer and Fall Internships are now available at The Morning Call (Allentown, PA).

The Special Sections Department at The Morning Call produces nearly 50 editorial/advertorial products every year plus several weekly and monthly publications. Our interns contribute to these publications with research, writing and photography.

This is a hands-on internship guided by the professionals. Interns will write news-related stories and features and localize agency copy for a diverse number of publications, including Cars, HomesPlus Weekly and Lehigh Valley Living Magazine.

There’s also a data crunching component for the newspaper’s yearly Community Guide.

You must enroll in WRI 380 Professional Seminar concurrent with at least the first three hours of WRI 390 Professional Writing Internship.

You may earn up to nine credits of WRI internship that count as part of your 120 minimum credits required for graduation. These can be earned in the following manner:

1) One internship for three, six, or nine credits.
2) Two internships totaling six or nine credits,
3) You may not take three WRI internships.

You work with two supervisors on your internship. Your professional writing faculty supervisor, whom you select based upon the persons with whom you have established good working relationships, determines your eligibility for the internship (including core completion and minimum QPA), the appropriateness of the site and work expectations, the suitable number of credits for the work, and the manner and amount of contact that will exist between you.

You must keep your PW supervisor aware of all significant events – good and bad -- during your internship, including absences, changes in work expectations, etc. Your site supervisor agrees to monitor your work and help you complete your internship requirements in a timely manner as well as to communicate regularly with your faculty supervisor.

You must keep a log of dates and hours worked and a journal of what you accomplished during that time. The log and journal must be e-mailed to your faculty supervisor on a weekly basis. Despite the popularity of e-mail emoticons and vernacular [ :>) ], PW faculty members expect you to consider even the e-mail itself as an assignment that reflects your best writing, including proofreading.

1) To earn three credits, document a minimum of 135 hours.
2) To earn six credits, document a minimum of 270 hours.
3) To earn nine credits, document a minimum of 405 hours.

Unless other arrangements have been approved by your PW faculty supervisor, all internships continue for the full semester or summer session(s), even if minimum hours have been completed.

Keep all of the work you develop for the portfolio you will compile. Both the cover and the spine of the portfolio must identify you, the semester and year, number of internship credits, the internship site, address and telephone number.

In the portfolio, include a title page with your photograph and internship site information, a resumé, a personal business card, the internship essay of 8-12 pages, and a section of work that includes the written assignment or your description of the assignment from your site supervisor with all phases of the production of the piece.

Save all drafts and final copies. Arrange to photocopy all camera-ready work, especially if your internship site receives “bluelines” from a printer and will not have a final product completed before your internship ends. The portfolio must be well organized and attractively presented. Establish a due date with your PW faculty supervisor. (Note: Do not confuse the WRI 390 internship portfolio with the WRI 380 senior portfolio; contents and due dates will differ.)

At least three weeks before your internship ends, provide the site supervisor with a copy of the “Site Supervisor’s Report” that was included in the internship packet and a stamped envelope addressed to your PW faculty supervisor.

The site supervisor will evaluate you on attitude, job performance, and personal characteristics; compare your performance with that of other employees on similar jobs; highlight your strengths and/or weaknesses; and rate your overall “prospects for success” in the field as excellent, good, fair or poor. The report must be mailed directly to your PW faculty supervisor (unless other arrangements are made) by the site supervisor; his or her signature must be written across the envelope’s seal.

Everything counts! Your site supervisor’s rating is only one factor in establishing your final grade. In addition, your PW faculty supervisor considers the degree to which you met all expectations – including deadlines while planning for the internship – as well as the quality of your journals, essay and portfolio, as factors in determining your internship grade.

In order to register for WRI 380, students must have:

(1) earned a "C" or better in ENG 023 (College Composition) or its
equivalent
(2) earned a 2.5 or better in the 18-credit PW core (WRI 100, WRI 207, WRI

(3) completed at least TWO WRI courses at the 300-level or above (300+) in
the major electives, and

Eckhaus Art Gallery on Main Street has an internship opportunity for writing

Most of the assignments can be completed from home, aside from some time spent in the gallery and organizing shows.

The Office of University Relations is searching for a student assistant/intern for the 2008 Spring Semester. This 10-hour per week position will primarily assist the Periodicals Managers with magazine and publications writing, editing, and proof reading. The Special Sections Department at The Morning Call produces nearly 50 editorial/advertorial products every year plus several weekly and monthly publications.

Our interns contribute to these publications with research, writing and photography. This is a hands-on internship guided by the professionals at The Morning Call.

Interns will write news-related stories and features and localize agency copy for a diverse number of publications, including Cars, HomesPlus Weekly and Lehigh Valley Living Magazine.

Real-life experience without the real-life risks.
But now there’s a way students can gain real-life exposure to the perils of impaired driving – without being put at risk. Introducing The Safety Bug, part of an innovative program developed by Pennsylvania Driving Under The Influence Association.

The PA DUI Safety Bug has been custom engineered to demonstrate the loss of control one would experience if operating a motor vehicle while in an impaired state. The key difference is that it’s the car – not the driver – who is “drunk.”

A trained mentor in the front passenger seat controls settings which cause the vehicle’s steering to lose its finesse and prompt the braking mechanisms to become unpredictable. The result is an unsettling episode for the teen in the driver seat who gains a firsthand glimpse of what it feels like to drive under the influence.

DrD and Music

Some of you might know this, but I have been a semi-professional musician for the past ten years. By "semi-professional," I mean that I have been paid to play, but I do not make my living exclusively by playing music.

I was in a Celtic band in Erie called Ischabaha for about five years, where I played bodhran, kungas, djembe, and various rattles and bells. This band also taught me how to sing. Click here to see a picture of the band from 2003 (when my hair was short).

I left Ischabaha to jam with a rock band called Evolution Circus. We performed a lot of original songs and had lots of fun rocking out. Unfortunately, this band folded after about four years.

Both bands played out a lot and both bands released CDs. I was the mixing engineer for the Ischabaha CD.

I also sat in from time to time with my friend, Pat's band, East Avenue, and jammed various gigs with other local musicians during those ten years.

My favorite bands? Too many to mention, but I can give you a short list. I love Chris Cornell and Collective Soul. Santana and Train (Pat Monahan is from my home town of Erie). Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, Kanye West, Keb Mo', the list goes on and on.

So, let's get it started. What kinds of music do you like? Who have you seen? What CD is in your CD player right now?

I want to hear from you. The discussion can flow in any direction within the bounds of socially acceptable commentary. In other words, I want to hear about your favorite musical groups, your favorite books, your career goals, the best places to eat in Kutztown, top DVD releases, and/or questions you might have for me.

Personally, I am interested in many topics including music, movies, books, camping, hiking, astronomy, poetry, mythology, travel, photography, video editing, skiing, and technical writing.

I'll get the ball rolling with a separate entry on music. We can go from there.

Leadership Training

LinK is a training initiative for Kutztown University students who would like to discover and strengthen their leadership skills. The program’s focus is to develop successful student leaders who have the desire to become involved in campus and community life.

The LinK program focuses on a variety of leadership topics presented in an interactive format of seminars, guest speakers, professional development experiences and small group experiences. LinK is a year-long leadership certificate program. Due to the high demand of this program, a short application is necessary. The first 30–40 eligible students will be selected to participate in this year’s program.

The applications can be found in Student Union and Involvement Services- MSU 153, MSU 274 and at the Information Desk- starting on Monday, September 17.

The application deadline is Friday, September 28, 2007.

The internships involve marketing, editing, and publishing. The marketing position is asking for English majors.
